El Ford Transit Custom está desarrollado sobre una plataforma derivada de la que da vida a la familia Transit. Gracias a ello se ofrece con dos diferentes longitudes de carrocería (donde la principal diferencia radica en la longitud del voladizo trasero), una corta de 4,97 metros y la larga de 5,33 metros.
Sobre esta base, cuenta con tres carrocerías diferentes, una destinada a uso industrial, denominada «Van», otra para uso mixto «Kombi» que puede contar con hasta 9 plazas. En el caso de esta última versión, todo el vehículo está acristalado. Opcionalmente delante puede haber dos asientos, más cómodos y que reducen las plazas a ocho.
La capacidad de carga del Transit Custom oscila entre los 3 y 8,3 metros cúbicos, en función de la longitud, altura y asientos habilitados. En la gama también hay dos alturas de techo a elegir. Las puertas traseras laterales son correderas y atrás puede tener portón o puerta de doble hoja.

La gama mecánica con la que está disponible en el mercado español el Ford Transit Custom está formada por una única mecánica diésel con una cilindrada de 2.0 litros, cuatro cilindros en línea y turbo. La potencia que entrega el bloque TDCi se organiza en tres escalones: 105, 130 y 170 CV.
La caja de cambios que puede estar asociada a esta mecánica es de dos tipos. Por una parte hay una de corte manual con seis relaciones y otra automática con el mismo número de inserciones denominada en la marca Powershift.
